Advent/Christmas Caroling – Saturday, Dec. 15 @ 5:00pm: Meet us at the vicarage at 5:00pm to warm up your vocal chords with a light chili dinner. From there, we will head out into the neighborhood for some merry caroling until we can’t feel our noses. Then we will come back to the Student Center for some hot cocoa. We will hold a short rehearsal on Sunday, Dec. 9 following Bible study. Please let Rachel or Vicar know if you will be joining us for dinner.
On-Campus Bible Study – Mondays at 3:00pm: Vicar Askins will continue leading this Fall semester study on Ezekiel in the UWM Union Room 342 through Monday, Dec. 17th (UWM’s finals week). It’s not too late to join in on the study!

Join us for a getaway weekend full of relaxing fun and fellowship before the start of Spring semester classes. Follow your email updates for further details or contact Rachel rachelploetz@yahoo.com with any questions.
Symposia – January 15-18: Held every year on the Fort Wayne campus, the four-day event is highlighted by presentations on Exegetical Theology and the Lutheran Confessions. For more info, visit their website, http://www.ctsfw.edu/events/symposia/. Several LSF students will be attending. If you would like to attend as well, please contact Amy starlight0518@yahoo.com or Rachel for info on transportation and housing.
Christ On Campus @ UWM – Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7:00pm: This year’s topic is Intelligent Design vs. Evolution. The details are currently being worked out. YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS EVENT! Invite everyone you know and their cousins. The lecture/debate will be held in the UWM Student Union, and hors d'ourves will be provided. Stay tuned for further details.

Reformation Day
REFORMATION DAY (an exerpt from Rev. Wieting's sermon 10/28/07)
Dear Children of the Reformation, it was an age that looked for a link to God in the extraordinary and extreme – relics, pilgrimages, and more. But Luther pointed to the simple yet profound right in front of our eyes: to the cross, to water, to bread and wine, to the Word of God.
Ours is an age of visions and dreams and nature worship and spiritual illusions. But Christ is still found in the simple and the profound that Luther pointed to, where Christ has promised to be “for you”.
Not only did He make the sea and springs of water, He made water to be a spring of new life in your Baptism. Not only did He shed His blood on Calvary, He bids you to drink of His blood today. What cannot be taken by violence, He comes to freely give you by His grace through faith.
The Reformation was not the start of something new, but the recovery of that which makes new – the eternal Gospel. God help us to hold fast to that Gospel in sincere and contrite hearts. God help us to clearly proclaim that Gospel in our corner of the world and to every nation and tribe and language and people.

Join us for a continuing study of Ezekiel's call and ordination: last week we studied the inaugural vision of Ezekiel. Matins – Wednesdays @ 7:10am

Vicar Askins will continue leading a study on Ezekiel, “the coolest book in the Bible!” This week, we are studying Chapters 1 - 3. Ezekiel begins his book by writing a description of the Glory of YHWH. Repetitive and redundant at times, it demonstrates the fear Ezekiel felt in being in the presence of YHWH. After Ezekiel sees the vision, YHWH calls and installs Ezekiel as a watchman for Israel with a dire warning if Ezekiel fails to do as the Lord commands. Please join us this week to work through what we might call the Old Testament 'Office of the Holy Ministry'.

Here's What's On Tap This Week at LMC
Please join us (and bring a friend!) for these upcoming events:
On-Campus Bible Study: Ezekiel
Wednesday, Oct. 3rd @ 3:00pm
UWM Union Room 342
The Prophet Ezekiel: A Watchman For Israel
Written to the Jews in captivity in Babylonia and to God's people everywhere, the book of Ezekiel announces God's judgment on Israel and other nations and foretells the eventual salvation of God's people.
Ezekiel was a prophet by God's call. He spoke as God's messenger in the midst of a storm of national defeat that devastated his people. He announced that even Jerusalem would not escape destruction. In addition, during this time Ezekiel had to endure the pain of his wife's death.
Ezekiel spoke against idolaters, abominations in the temple, wicked counselors, evil rulers, false prophets, the unfaithful, and all those who rebelled against the Lord. Sound familiar in today's context? Ezekiel also spoke of the restoration of Israel and an everlasting covenant. Sound familiar?
Please join us for a weekly study of Ezekiel starting this Wednesday at 3:00pm in the UWM Union Room 342 (take elevator to 3rd floor, straight ahead from elevator to hallway) and continuing throughout the semester (same time, same place each week).
Table Talk
Thursday, Oct. 4th @ 12:15pm
UWM Union Room 346
Come hungry and leave happy...and "enlightened!"
Join us (even leave early or arrive late) as your schedule permits. Lunch will be provided as Vicar Askins leads a short presentation and discussion on the modern quest for spirituality and what spirituality in this era entails.
NOTE: The room has switched to Union Room 346 (take elevator to 3rd floor, follow hallway straight ahead).
Christ On Campus retreat: Minneapolis
October 19-21
The Great Reversal and Christian Vocation
"You're in the big chair...""
God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus..." (Ephesians 2:4-6). According to St. Paul, because Christ has been raised up from the dead and has ascended into Heaven and is now enthroned at the right hand of the Father, we too are raised up and seated with him by grace.
So now what? How does this mystical and eschatalogical reality impact our lives in the here and now on earth? What shape does this reigning with Christ take?
Join us for Fall Study Weekend at University Lutheran Chapel October 19th through the 21st to find out!
PRESENTER: Rev. Matthew Payne graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN, in 1989. He has served in the parish ministry for 18 years. He has served as a campus pastor, and as an adjunct professor at Concordia Univeristy in Irvine, California. Pr. Payne is married to the beautiful and talented Uraina. They enjoy life to the hilt (within the bounds of Christian piety), and can often be found in the hot tub sipping a fine Californian Zin.
If you are interested in attending this Christ on Campus retreat, please RSVP by October 6th. Travel and housing accomodations will be made based upon the number of students attending. Talk with Vicar or Rachel if you have any questions.

Notes from Sunday's Bible Study
For those who missed today's study, or, a summarization for those who were there...
THE THEOLOGY OF THE CROSS
The texts:
Luke 3:21-4:13; Mark 1:9-13; Matthew 3:13-4:17
To fulfill all righteousness
Why was it necessary for Christ to be baptized? Christ said it was necessary to fulfill all righteousness. He was baptized a) to be like us in every way, b) that our sins, in Baptism, might be transferred to Him. Hence in this baptism, all sins are given to Him, fulfilling all righteousness. See Luther’s Flood Prayer in LSB pp. 268-269.
My Beloved Son
What is the importance of Jesus being declared God’s Beloved Son? In each of the temptations following, Satan tempts Jesus to doubt that God made this declaration regarding Jesus. Secondly, in other passages, such as the sacrifice of Isaac and Hebrews 12:3-11, demonstrate that it is the beloved son who endures the cross and suffering, and Christ is He who hung on the cross for our redemption.
Jesus and Israel / Adam
Numerous parallels between Jesus and Israel, as well as Jesus and Adam, exist in the Baptismal accounts. For instance, Jesus fasted in the wilderness 40 days and nights, Israel was in exile in the wilderness 40 years. Jesus fasted and was hungry, Israel complained in the wilderness constantly because of their hunger. Luke emphasizes the connection between Jesus and Adam. Hence, Luke places his genealogy between the Baptism and the temptation. Both Adam and Jesus are called the son of God. The first temptation involves eating, a temptation Adam failed in the Garden of Eden, but Christ overcame in the wilderness. See also Romans 5:12-21 for more on the parallels between Christ and Adam.
What does it matter that these parallels exist? They matter because Jesus is fulfilling all that was written about Him in the Law and Prophets (Old Testament). They matter because they demonstrate that where humanity was defeated by Satan, Christ by the Word of God overcomes.
The First Temptation
What is the first temptation about? a) If Jesus did turn the stones into bread, He would be taking up powers He willingly laid aside in order to redeem humanity. b) A temptation to doubt the Word of God at Jesus’ baptism, for Satan asks, “If you are the Son of God.” c) A temptation to doubt God’s testing of Jesus through temptation.
A crucial distinction: In class, I forgot to make the distinction between testing and tempting. God tempts no one, as we say in the meaning to the 6th petition. God however does test and discipline His children. Since Jesus was not a sinner and therefore not in need of discipline, God must have been testing Jesus. It was the Father’s will for Jesus to be tested. So also for His children through Baptism, that we be tested as is seen in the reading from Hebrews 12:3-11. This is ultimately a source of comfort and hope for us His children.
[In Deut. 8:1-6 we get some more of the background for the quote Jesus uses. ...]
The Second Temptation
Satan abuses the Scriptures in this temptation. Satan does know God’s Word. He knows God’s Word and by twisting God’s Word tempts Christians to doubt what God has said. Note again that Satan asks Jesus, “If you are the Son of God.” He tempts Jesus to doubt the proclamation of God as Jesus’ Baptism. In this way he also tempts us to doubt the gifts given to us, among which is adoption as God’s children, through Baptism.
Satan misinterprets the Psalm, tempting Jesus to interpret Psalm 91 as a theologian of glory might. In other words, Satan tempts Jesus to think, “Because I’m God’s Son, nothing bad should happen to me.” Christ uses the quotation against Satan, for Christ realizes that in the weakness and death on the cross, God brings the salvation promised in Psalm 91, a salvation that brings eternal life in the shelter of the Almighty.
The Third Temptation
Satan tempts Jesus to a) take what Satan has not right to give. In the same way Satan tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, to take what Satan had no right to give. b) This temptation is also an implicit denial of the Word of God spoken at Jesus’ Baptism. Satan says, “All this I will give you.” In truth, all of it already belongs to Jesus, for Jesus is both God and Man. He is the second person of the Trinity. c) Finally all worship belongs to God alone, and no created being is worthy of worship.
In the end, one can see all three temptations are temptations to a) doubt the Word of God spoken over His children at their Baptism, b) have other gods rather than the one saving redeeming God, who is revealed in Christ Jesus, c) temptations for Jesus to take up His divine power He willingly laid aside during His humiliation in order that He might redeem humanity.
Jesus, Just an Example?
Does Christ’s example overcoming of these temptations give us just a good example of how to overcome temptation or do they serve another purpose too? Jesus is a good example. Quoting Scripture back to Satan is how Jesus overcomes Him and so we also should follow His example as best we are able. Ultimately we are incapable of such a feat. We cannot know enough Scripture to always turn aside every temptation Satan throws our way. We cannot overcome every temptation. Thus Jesus is more than just a good example. He is the one who stands where sinners stood, in the waters of Baptism, and now conquers every temptation thrown at Him. He is the conqueror and vanquisher of Satan. This is why the temptations are included for our learning.
What Does This Have to Do with the Theology of the Cross?
The Bible class for today may have seemed like a wild adventure off the topic of the theology of the cross. The theology of the cross is intimately tied to Baptism and subsequently to the suffering born under the cross, which includes temptations, testing, discipline and more. Baptism places the Christian in opposition to the Satan, the world and the sinful flesh. Baptism is entry gate in the difficult life of the Christian. It also demonstrates that Christ, the Son of God, still underwent the trials and temptations we face today. He is like us in every way, except without sin. This then is a source of comfort for us, that in the weakness of suffering found under the cross, God works in us to accomplish His purpose. Our claim to victory: the name placed upon us at Baptism, “Father, Son and Holy Ghost,” thereby making us heirs unto eternal life.

Virginia Tech Responses
There is good deal of junk and poor responses out there today regarding the tragedy at Virginia Tech on Monday.
But there have been some good responses also.
Concordia Theological Seminary has a fine, concise, and helpful response on their home page: www.ctsfw.edu
Issues, Etc. has a radio interview archived under April 17 by two campus pastors: Rev. Marcus Zill (Laramie, WY) and Rev. Eric Andrae (Pittsburgh). This gives a helpful Lutheran response: http://kfuo.org/ie_main.htm

Week of 3/25-4/1
Fifth Sunday in Lent
This Sunday is March 25, upon which the church year celebrates the Annunciation. This is the day where we commemorate the announcement of the angel Gabriel to the blessed Virgin Mary that she would be the mother of God, bring about the conception of Jesus in her womb. This date was chosen because it is nine months before Christmas, the commemoration of the birth of Jesus. When this date falls on a Sunday, there are varying opinions on whether the Sunday's lectionary (in this case the Fifth Sunday of Lent) or the Annunciation should be observed. In any event, it's a fitting day to remember in Daily Prayer.
Kammerchor Concert at CUW
Sunday, March 25, the Kammerchor of Concordia University Wisconsin will present their spring concert at 3:30 PM at the Chapel of Christ Triumphant at CUW. It's free for CUW students with an ID; others are $7.00.

It's a long title, but a great topic. Dr. Wallace Schulz of Lutheran Heritage Foundation (publisher of Good News magazine) will present this topic on Tuesday, March 27 at the Lake Shore Room at Concordia University Wisconsin. It's at 7 PM. We'll leave from Luther Memorial around 6:20 PM. Please let us know if you're coming!

Vespers for Lent
One of the practices of the church during Lent includes increased prayer. We are invited and encouraged to increase our daily prayer at home through the reading of the Scriptures, the singing of Psalms and hymns, and offering up petitions. A possible resource for this would include the Lenten devotions from HIGHER THINGS.
We are also invited to join in increased corporate prayer. At Luther Memorial Chapel, we have Vespers on Wednesdays in Lent at 6 PM. Vespers is the historic evening prayer office of the church. Everyone is welcome to join us. Before Vespers, we have a light supper at 5:15 PM. In addition, we have our regularly scheduled Matins on Tuesday mornings at 9 AM. If you're free at these times, we invite you to join us to hear God's Word and respond in prayer and song.

Ash Wednesday
The church begins the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday, 40 days before Easter. This year Ash Wednesday is on February 21. The Gospel from Matthew 6 draws us toward the Lenten spiritual disciplines of increased almsgiving (to the poor), increased prayer, and increased fasting. These are disciplines for our spiritual renewal that point us to the grace of Our Savior.
Lent is a time to call to remembrance Christ's passion for our sins and to set our sights on the treasures of heaven. Join us for the Ash Wednesday Divine Service at 6 PM at Luther Memorial Chapel. The Risen and Ascended Christ comes to us in the Divine Service to speak to us through His Word and to feed us with the food of immortality through the Sacrament of the Altar.

Epiphany
After the twelve days of Christmas, which end on January 5, the church year moves to the Epiphany season. The Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord, January 6, begins this season. Epiphany means "manifestation," that is, "making known." Jesus Christ, true Man, is shown to be also true God in the Epiphany season. That's what Epiphany is about! It's more than just a remembrance of the Wise Men coming to see the child, which is the Gospel account for the Feast of the Epiphany. But it goes on to include the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River and Jesus' first miracle: turning water into wine.
